Newly-listed explorer Norfolk Metals (ASX: NFL) has announced it has secured an exclusive contract with Australian Mining Technologies (AMT) for the maiden drilling program at its Roger River gold project in Tasmania.

The junior made its ASX debut late last month after raising $5.5 million in an initial public offering, with the funds expected to go toward planned exploration programs across its Tasmanian and South Australian projects.

Its plans at Roger River include 3,000 metres of diamond drilling with an aim to identify epithermal gold occurrences in targets defined from ground-based gravity and airborne aeromagnetic surveys.

Norfolk had previously planned for the maiden drilling campaign to launch in the June or September quarter. An updated commencement date is yet to be announced.

Drilling rig to ship to Tasmania in coming weeks

Norfolk acknowledged AMT for its highly experienced team with more than 40 years of drilling experience throughout Australia and South East Asia in similar terrain and geological environments to Roger River.

The drilling contractor owns a new Hanjin D&B rig capable of diamond drilling to 600m. Norfolk today confirmed the rig is scheduled to ship from Perth in Western Australia to Tasmania in the coming weeks.

Aeromagnetic drone survey to begin this month

In addition, Norfolk has received confirmation from Atlas Geophysics that the start date for the undertaking of an aeromagnetic drone survey will be 20 April.

The survey will take about two weeks in the field with results expected to be processed shortly after completion.

The results are expected to further assist with honing drill targets.

Roger River gold project

Norfolk’s Roger River project comprises one granted exploration licence and one licence application covering a total 261 square kilometres.

It is located 410km northwest of Hobart and is considered prospective for gold as indicated by the intense silicification, argillisation and diatreme breccias in close proximity to the Roger River Fault along with carbonate-rich host rocks.

Norfolk’s other asset is the Orroroo uranium project within the Walloway Basin in South Australia.
