Western Mines completes initial field work at Melita, first results expected later this month
Results from soil sample analysis are anticipated within one-to-two weeks.
Western Mines Group (ASX: WMG) has completed its two-pronged initial field work at the Melita project, where the Princess Melita prospect is being targeted for gold and Airstrip gossan for copper-lead-zinc.
Soil samples have gone to the laboratory and first results are expected in one to two weeks.
The field team also visited Kylie’s Patch where local prospectors recently reported finds of gold nuggets. The prospectors showed the company’s team the location of their find.
“This new area looks very prospective and will be the focus of a second field program in early October,” the company said.
A batch of 10oz to 12oz of gold nuggets and gold specimens was reportedly collected.
“While these claims cannot be independently verified by WMG, the location and geology certainly looked prospective,” the company states.
In the ‘heart of the WA goldfields’
Melita is located 20km southeast of Leonora in Western Australia and close to the Kookynie gold mining centre in what the company describes as “the heart of the WA goldfields”.
The Kookynie area has seen a recent upswing in exploration activity, including the recent listing of Mt Malcolm Mines (ASX: M2M), a gold explorer.
Western Mines managing director Caedmon Marriott was pleased with the initial field program.
“The more we visit Melita, the more we learn about the area and a great example of this is Kylie’s Patch.”
“This new target area looks very promising,” he added.
Melita covers 105sq km and is located to the north of the historic Niagara, Kookynie and Orient Well-Butterfly gold mining centres, with past production estimated at over 600,000oz, and close to Genesis Minerals (ASX: GMD) Ulysses gold project. There are numerous historic workings within the project area.
Copper-lead-zinc known since 1970s
The Airstrip gossan was first identified in the 1970s and confirmed by Western Mines’ recent rock chip sampling work.
The company’s flagship project and current primary focus is the Mulga Tank nickel-copper-platinum group metals project on the under-explored Minigwal Greenstone Belt.
Western Mines holds numerous other projects across major WA mineral belts including the Rock of Ages project, which is located approximately 32km southeast of Laverton, Jasper Hill (gold), with numerous prospective gold trends extending from the adjacent Lord Byron and Fish historical gold mines.
The company is also actively exploring Youanmi (gold), Pavarotti (Ni-Cu-PGE), Broken Hill Bore (gold) and Pinyalling (gold).
