Kaoko Metals webinar review: copper exploration update in Namibia

Gerard O'Donovan, Managing Director and CEO of Kaoko Metals (ASX: KAO), presented a company update focused on copper exploration in Namibia. The webinar covered the company’s recent ASX listing, its main projects, geological setting, capital structure and planned drilling activities.

Company overview

Kaoko Metals described itself as a recent ASX listing, having listed on 8 May. In the presentation, Gerard O'Donovan said the company is an exploration business focused on copper and pursuing a discovery-led strategy.

The company said its value proposition is underpinned by four key pillars:

  • high-grade assets
  • a mining-friendly jurisdiction
  • a defined exploration strategy
  • proven leadership

Projects highlighted

Chalcos Copper-Silver Project

Chalcos is described in the webinar as a sedimentary-hosted copper-silver project in the Kyoko Belt, which the presentation referred to as the third-largest copper belt in Africa.

Gerard O'Donovan said the project includes reported surface grades of up to 69.6% copper and silver grades up to 2,030 grams per tonne. He also said Chalcos is under-explored and drill-ready, with drilling due to commence next week at the time of the presentation.

The webinar also referred to the Donkey Hill area, described as a 700 metre outcrop expression at surface with chalcopyrite and bornite.

Carabib Copper-Gold-Tungsten Project

Kaoko Metals also highlighted the Carabib Copper-Gold-Tungsten Project. In the presentation, the company said the project has drill intercepts including 2% copper, nearly 1 gram per tonne gold and nearly 10.72% tungsten.

The company said it has started a project-scale geochemical programme at Carabib.

Jurisdiction and geology

The presentation focused heavily on Namibia as a mining jurisdiction. Kaoko Metals described Namibia as stable, mining-friendly and one of the best jurisdictions in Africa, with world-class geology and established infrastructure.

The company said its projects are located within the Kyoko Copper Belt and the Otavi subgroup, and compared the geological setting with nearby projects and regional copper systems.

Exploration plans and funding

Gerard O'Donovan said the company has a defined exploration strategy based on systematic and methodical work aimed at discovery.

The webinar stated that:

  • the first drill hole at Chalcos is due to begin next week
  • an initial 2,000 to 3,000 metre drilling program is planned
  • the company expected to have approximately $5.5 million in cash in the forthcoming quarterly update
  • the first drilling program was estimated to cost about $500,000

Leadership and team

The presentation outlined the company’s board and technical team, including:

  • Mark Thompson, non-executive chair
  • Gerard O'Donovan, managing director and CEO
  • Johnny Derouge, non-executive director
  • Brett Tucker, CFO and company secretary
  • in-country team members including Doctor Ismael Kangui and Lissus Pius
  • Callum Standing, described as joining as a geologist from Monday following the webinar

Capital structure

Gerard O'Donovan said Kaoko Metals had a tight register and a relatively small share base. He stated that the company had 60 million shares on issue, had a market capitalisation of around $31 million at the time of the presentation, and that 41% of the register was escrowed for up to 24 months.

Nearby and comparable projects

The webinar compared Kaoko Metals’ projects with nearby copper projects and exploration activity in the region. The company referred to Midas Minerals and other nearby developments when discussing the geological setting and regional exploration potential.

Summary

Kaoko Metals used the webinar to present itself as a newly listed copper explorer in Namibia with two drill-ready projects, near-term drilling plans at Chalcos and a technical team focused on systematic exploration. The presentation was optimistic in tone, but the information shared was company commentary and should be assessed alongside independent research.
