Cold spray solutions provider Titomic (ASX: TTT) has been invited to join a flagship project focused on the standardisation of additive manufacturing technologies and practices for the energy sector.

Led by independent assurance and risk management provider DNV, the program will focus on developing new standards for cold spray solutions to manufacture parts and repair equipment in the oil and gas industry.

It will involve streamlining specifications for common and specific part cases and materials, allowing for broader adoption of additive manufacturing in the sector.

Qualification standards

The initial focus will be on setting qualification standards for manufacturing structural and machine parts using high-strength nickel-chromium-based Alloy 625.

Subsea parts using low-alloy carbon steel and employing cold spray for repairs will also be looked at in this early period.

Titomic aims to help the industry transition to more efficient and sustainable production methods, overcoming key barriers to the adoption of additive manufacturing.

Accelerated commercialisation

Titomic said the DNV program would help accelerate the commercialisation of its cold spray technology for a sector challenged by issues arising from corrosion, wear and parts failures.

“This program will elevate the exposure of cold spray technology within the oil and gas industry and solidify our position as a leader in providing innovative and efficient repair, coating and additive manufacturing solutions for industries facing long-standing challenges,” the comapny said.

“By participating in this program, Titomic is set to accelerate the adoption of cold spray technology, paving the way for more sustainable and effective manufacturing practices across the sector.”

AR software suite

Titomic also announced the launch this week of an augmented reality (AR) software suite for its D523 portable system, marking the world’s first use of AR technology in cold spray.

D523 provides a low-pressure, handheld cold spray solution capable of repairing metal components without heat, thereby eliminating the risk of thermal damage.

The system allows for dissimilar metal deposition, making it uniquely suited for maintenance, repair and overhaul operations in the oil and gas, aerospace, defence and manufacturing industries.

Pre-set parameters

The AR suite utilises head-worn Microsoft HoloLens technology to standardise repairs by providing pre-set parameters for common tasks such as wheel and landing gear adjustments and corrosion remediation.

It displays real-time system data including temperature, system settings and optimal nozzle range for specific repairs.

Titomic expects the AR suite will encourage large-scale organisations to incorporate its cold spray technology into their MRO work.
