Infill drilling is about to begin at Resource Base’s (ASX: RBX) Mitre Hill rare earth element (REE) project that spans the Victoria and South Australian border.

The company will “shortly” begin an infill aircore drilling program at exploration licence EL007646, which is on the southern margin of the Murray Basin in western Victoria.

This infill campaign follows a roadside drilling program in the March quarter and aims to gather sample material for mineralogy and metallurgical test work.

Additionally, it will test the entire exploration licence area – covering it with 200m by 100m spacing.

Resource Base noted current market conditions regarding cost and drill contractor availability were challenging.

As a result, the company has acquired an aircore rig for its drilling programs, which will provide “substantial cost savings”, while enabling drilling to continue across the wider project.

The rig was manufactured in 2007 and was purchased for $95,000.

Mitre Hill REE project

Mitre Hill comprises 1 granted tenement in Victoria, with 15 under application. In South Australia’s southeast, Resource Base also has another tenement which makes up part of the project and was granted earlier this month.

Resource Base plans to complete aircore drilling at the South Australian licence during this quarter.

The South Australian tenement covers 809 square kilometres of ground and is the largest exploration licence.

Resource Base noted the South Australian licence is adjacent to Australian Rare Earths’ (ASX: AR3) exploration licence, which hosts a JORC resource of 39.9 million tonnes at 725 parts per million total rare earth oxide (TREO).

Across the wider Mitre Hill project, Resource Base has pegged up 2,649sq km of ground.

The company believes the region is an emerging ionic clay REE precinct. As well as Resource Base and Australian Rare Earths, TSXV-listed Lions Bay Capital is exploring in the area for REE.

Lions Bay is earning into Savic Minerals’ nearby tenements where drilling has unearthed 1m at 2,140ppm TREO along strike of Australian Rare Earths’ REE deposit.
