Provaris Energy to partner with Norwegian firm on green hydrogen value chain projects
Provaris Energy (ASX: PV1) has announced it will partner with a Norwegian developer of hydrogen production hubs and value chains to progress green hydrogen value chain projects in the Nordics.
The deal with Norwegian Hydrogen AS will combine the skills and experience of both companies for the large-scale production and export of hydrogen to key European ports using Provaris’ hydrogen carriers and storage solutions.
A joint concept study will be completed in the March quarter to identify a preferred production and export site and determine the viability of connecting Provaris’ compressed hydrogen supply chain to nominated ports in Germany and the Netherlands.
The companies will also complete a technical and economic review for the production and supply of compressed gaseous green hydrogen to these ports.
The review will cover renewable power supply, hydrogen production, compression facilities and jetty and import infrastructure.
Applications will also be made for funding available through national schemes and the European Union.
Hydrogen partnership
Provaris managing director Martin Carolan said the company was pleased to move forward with the new hydrogen partnership.
“This agreement will accelerate our development ambitions of an integrated export hydrogen project from the Nordics which will benefit from the simplicity and efficiency of compressed hydrogen as a marine carrier,” he said.
“It also has strategic alignment with the development timeline of our H2Neo carriers and validates increasing interest in our compressed hydrogen transport solution for supply into Europe.”
Hydrogen supply chains
Norwegian Hydrogen was founded in 2020 to target opportunities for the development of hydrogen production and supply chains to meet growing demand for zero emission solutions in the Nordics.
Investors including Flakk Group, Mitsui & Co, Hexagon Purus, Hofseth International and Tafjord bring expertise ranging from technology development (including compressed hydrogen) and electrical utilities through to hydrogen and oxygen offtake.
Norwegian Hydrogen is currently advancing the Hellesylt Hydrogen Hub Pilot-E project which will develop and demonstrate a complete green hydrogen supply chain in the northwest of Norway.
The project will commence production later this year and is paving way for the company’s pipeline of significantly larger projects across the Nordics.
Norway represents 50% of the European Union’s hydropower reservoir capacity and will have a considerable role in reaching the European Commission’s REPowerEU ambition of 10 million tonnes per annum in hydrogen imports by 2030.
