Final assays from diamond drilling completed at Cape Ray last year returned 14m at 4.5g/t gold from 88m, including 1m at 27.4g/t gold.

Newfoundland focused gold explorer Matador Mining (ASX: MZZ) has released results of the last two awaited assays — and proclaimed them as outstanding and exceeding expectations.

The holes are the final ones to be reported from the company’s late 2021 campaign of infill diamond drilling at the Window Glass Hill deposit within the Cape Ray gold project in Canada.

As with the earlier reported holes from this program, these assays have underlined strong grades consistent with past drilling results in the target’s sheeted and stockwork vein system.

Multiple gold zones in last two assays

The first of the final two assays, from CRD318, returned three discrete zones: 15m at 2.9 grams per tonne gold from 10m, 1m at 3.5g/t gold from 72m, and 14m at 4.5g/t gold from 88m, including 1m at 27.4g/t and 1m at 17g/t.

The other hole, CRD322, hit 23m at 2.3g/t gold from 22m (including 1m at 16.6g/t), and then from 78m the drilling intercepted a separate 7m at 0.9g/t, including 1m at 2.1g/t.

Chief geologist Warren Potma said these final infill drill holes have exceeded expectations.

“CRD322 is particularly encouraging as this hole was drilled to the south and on the periphery of this same high-grade shoot and surprised us with the quality of a 23m intercept grading 2.3g/t gold.”

Mineralisation open for ‘at least’ 80m

Mr Potma added that gold mineralisation is open for at least 80m south and southwest of CRD322, presenting a high follow-up target.

Cape Ray was discovered in 1977 and has been explored by several mining companies, with more than 85,000m of drilling having been done (much of that before 1989).

The project is in the south-western area of the Canadian province of Newfoundland, 25km northeast of the coastal town of Port aux Basques.

Matador is the largest holder of ground along the Cape Ray shear, with its tenement boundary located approximately 50km along strike from Toronto-listed Marathon Gold’s 4.2-million-ounce Valentine Lake gold project.
