Lithium Universe (ASX: LU7) has confirmed that its Bécancour lithium refinery project in Canada is advancing well and remains on track for startup in 2027.

The multi-purpose, battery-grade plant will form part of the Québec lithium processing hub and will be located at the Bécancour Waterfront Industrial Park.

Overall, the project is reported to be adhering to its timeline, ensuring readiness for a capital cost estimate and commitment to ensure environmental compliance with the regulatory framework.

No significant issues

Key milestones completed to date include major engineering activities such as the finalisation of the plant layout and the preparation of documents for equipment packages, including datasheets and scopes of work.

Environmental site visits and studies are ongoing, with no significant issues identified so far.

Nine packages have been issued for “priority one” mechanical equipment and another five electrical equipment packages will be issued for inquiry within the next seven days.

Lithium Universe aims to evaluate all packages by the end of September.

The development of the package register, material take-offs and equipment lists is ongoing, ensuring all necessary components and details are accurately documented and organised for the project’s successful execution.

Refinery layout

Lithium Universe has published the first release of the Bécancour refinery layout, with several features such as the boiler plant and process effluent treatment still under development.

Structural framing of buildings and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems are in progress, along with civil works encompassing drainage, road pavements, vehicle paths, sedimentation ponds and car parking.

Efforts are also being made to enhance spodumene and residue storage, focusing on materials handling and capacity.

Field campaigns

Four field campaigns have been carried out to develop knowledge of the biodiversity present at the refinery site.

The company has surveyed the presence of short-eared owls, breeding birds and fish and their habitats.

No species listed under the Canadian Species at Risk Act have so far been encountered.

The project team is also engaged in activities to reduce encroachment on wetlands identified on the property.

Surveys are expected to be completed during the Canadian summer, with the results used to support environmental permitting activities and discussions with regulators to ensure the project is developed in compliance with the environmental framework.
