Kalamazoo Resources (ASX: KZR) now holds 2,062 sq km of lithium-prospective ground covering both the Victorian and southern New South Wales sections of the prolific Lachlan Fold Belt.

The formerly predominant gold explorer says its increasing focus on lithium has prompted searches for more potential targets along the Lachlan belt.

In northeast Victoria, Kalamazoo has been granted three new exploration licences, which now make up what is called the Tallangatta lithium project.

This new ground is contiguous with the company’s Jingellic lithium project, which has also been expanded to 1,220 sq km.

Caesium, tantalum and tin also in the mix

The company says the Jingellic and Tallangatta projects together cover geology highly prospective for both pegmatite-hosted lithium-ceasium-tantalum mineralisation as well as hard rock tin.

Kalamazoo chairman and chief executive officer Luke Reinehr pointed to the attention now being given to this part of northeast Victoria.

Chilean lithium giant, SQM, which is a joint-venture partner of Kalamazoo, has also joined forces with Dart Mining (ASX: DTM) which holds the Dorchap project that lies adjacent to Kalamazoo’s ground tenure.

That move, he said, provides the company “with encouragement that being an early mover in exploring for lithium in the southern Lachlan Fold Belt has excellent potential”.

Outcropping pegmatites identified

Kalamazoo notes initial studies and field reconnaissance across both its project areas have confirmed the presence of numerous outcropping pegmatite dykes as well as alluvial and hard rock tin-tungsten and tantalum occurrences.

Kalamazoo has previously stated its Lachlan Fold Belt lithium projects form part of the company’s strategy of acquiring and exploring high-quality lithium targets.

Its lithium exploration footprint includes not only the Lachlan belt but exploration tenure across the Pilbara region in Western Australia.

The Lachlan ground contains a mix of state forest, timber plantation, cleared and uncleared farmland.

Kalamazoo has initiated a proactive community engagement process with all identified stakeholders.

It then plans to follow up with low impact exploration programs, beginning with soil and stream sampling, field reconnaissance and mapping, along with aerial and remote sensing imagery.
