Pilbara gold explorer Kalamazoo Resources (ASX: KZR) has firmed up new gold targets for drilling at its The Sisters project, which lies along strike of De Grey Mining’s (ASX: DEG) major Hemi gold discovery.

Kalamazoo undertook a wide soil geochemical survey across the project, which was the first large-scale, gold-focused exploration program undertaken in the area, targeting the Wohler Shear Zone over a 14km-long structural corridor.

The survey identified anomaly zones containing up to 70 parts per billion gold, which are believed to be consistent with significant magnetic features seen in recently-completed low-level aeromagnetic and radiometric surveys.

Previous work by Kalamazoo at The Sisters had defined a gold soil anomaly over 3km long with a maximum 80ppb gold across the Wohler Shear Zone corridor which was open to the north-east and south-west.

Use of a cutting-edge multi-element analysis technique in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Perth-based LabWest Minerals Analysis extended and refined these results up to 83ppb.

The anomalous gold correlates with elevated levels of arsenic, silver, zinc, lead and copper.

A reverse circulation drilling campaign to test the new targets has been planned for later this year.

Renewed focus

The Pilbara region has seen a renewed focus on gold exploration on the heels of De Grey’s promising Hemi oxide-sulphide gold discovery within the 2.2 million ounce Mallina gold project.

Earlier this week, De Grey revealed it had hit high-grade, visible gold assaying up to 84.7 grams per tonne during a reverse circulation campaign at the deposit.

Continued strong drilling results are working towards De Grey’s strategic goal of making Hemi a tier-one scale gold development.

Local players

The Sisters project covers 136sq km within the same area as Hemi which is undergoing significant gold exploration by local players including DGO Gold (ASX: DGO), Coziron Resources (ASX: CZR), Arrow Minerals (ASX: AMD) and Venturex Resources (ASX: VXR).

Kalamazoo’s acreage is considered prospective for epigenetic gold mineralisation associated with the Wohler Shear Zone, which the company reports is a prospective splay from the Tabba Tabba, Mallina, Withnell and Berghaus Shear Zone complex.

The zone hosts much of De Grey’s gold resource including the Hemi gold deposit as well as potential mineralised intrusions, such as those recently identified at the Mallina project.

The Sisters is an important component of Kalamazoo’s Pilbara exploration portfolio, which was expanded this week by the acquisition of the Ashburton gold project from Northern Star Resources (ASX: NST).
