iTech has compiled historic drilling data to confirm an exploration target for its Sugarloaf prospect of 158-264Mt at 7-12% total graphitic content.

iTech Minerals (ASX: ITM) has released an exploration target for the Sugarloaf graphite prospect, along South Australia’s central Eyre Peninsula.

The target sits in a range of 158 million tonnes to 264Mt grading from 7% up to 12% total graphitic content and was compiled using data from over 33 historic drill holes inherited from Archer Materials (ASX: AXE) during acquisition of the tenements.

The holes were selected from a broader sample set for their total graphite carbon analyses.

The results confirmed the graphitic-rich body consists of two broadly flat-lying zones of graphitic schist averaging 50 metres in true width and varying in depth from surface to 50m below surface.

Airborne survey data

Data from two detailed airborne electromagnetic surveys was also used to predict the sub-surface continuity of graphite mineralisation.

A three-dimensional model was generated from the cross-sections to define the dimensions of the exploration target however density measurements are yet to be conducted.

Given the dominant quartz and muscovite composition, iTech said it is reasonable to ascribe a “very conservative density”.

Previously identified as microcrystalline graphite, the company believes the graphite has suitable characteristics to be used in the anodes of lithium-ion batteries.

Metallurgical testing

iTech has engaged German specialist battery materials consultancy ANZAPLAN to complete metallurgical testing on Sugarloaf graphite to determine if it can be processed into a concentrate suitable for battery anode material.

A sample is currently en route to Germany with results expected in four months.

iTech is also finalising government and landowner drilling approvals across the Sugarloaf exploration target with a view to starting drilling later this year.

Sugarloaf location

The Sugarloaf graphite prospect is located approximately 30km northwest of Cleve, adjacent to a planned processing plant for iTech’s Campoona spherical graphite project.

Having been previously overlooked in the past due to its fine flake size, Sugarloaf is believed to have potential as a source of graphite for the anodes of lithium-ion batteries in which fine flake size is considered to be a desirable characteristic.

iTech said the prospect also has the potential to significantly boost the resources at Campoona.
