West Australian explorer Gateway Mining (ASX: GML) has extended the size of the Achilles prospect with shallow intercepts as it continues to advance its long-held Gidgee gold project.

Gateway anticipates the shallow oxide gold hits have the potential to increase the resource at Achilles/Airport deposit beyond the existing 99,000oz.

Aircore drilling designed to test the immediate strike extents of oxide mineralisation has returned intersections of 4m at 14 grams per tonne gold, 4m at 4.4g/t, 8m at 1.6g/t and 8m at 1.4g/t.

All intercepts were within 44m of surface.

Gateway says the results indicate the potential to delineate additional shallow ounces within the corridor south of Achilles towards Airport.

The company plans shortly to launch what it calls a “major” reverse circulation drilling campaign at Gidgee focused on strike extensions and other high-priority targets.

Aircore drilling produces ‘fantastic’ results

Managing director Mark Cossom described the aircore results as “fantastic” and said they signify the opening up of new areas at Gidgee.

“The next round of drilling, together with the results reported recently, will contribute to our next major resource upgrade during the second half of 2022,” he added.

A total of 19 holes for 1,026m of aircore drilling was undertaken around the margins of Achilles.

The 99,000oz indicated and inferred resource at Achilles/Airport was defined last December and consists of a zone mainly comprising oxide-hosted gold mineralisation that extends almost to surface and along strike from the historic Rosie open pit.

Extensions targeted at three prospects

A RC drilling rig will begin work this week, primarily targeting direct extensions to the Montague-Boulder, Evermore and Achilles prospects.

In addition, preparations are underway for another “significant” aircore program commencing late in the September quarter.

This program will primarily be aimed at testing several conceptual targets within the broader Gidgee gold project.

The company says these imminent programs are consistent with its stated aim of completing 60,000m of drilling during 2022 at Gidgee to underpin further growth in the current 449,000oz gold mineral resource.
