Global data solutions provider Flexiroam (ASX: FRX) will distribute millions of its ConnectSIM cards to passengers on Malaysia Airlines Berhad flights commencing January 2019, as part of a strategic collaboration agreement reached with the airline.

The agreement will see Flexiroam hand out more than six million ConnectSIMs to travellers on Malaysia Airlines routes throughout the Asia Pacific, as well as on flights to and from New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

It will also distribute the cards on code-share flights with OneWorld partners including American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways, as well as non-OneWorld airlines such as Air Mauritius, Bangkok Airways and Singapore Airlines.

4G data roaming

Each ConnectSIM can be used by customers as an X-microchip, SIM card or eSIM, and is preloaded with high-speed 4G data which can be used globally.

Attaching the ultra-thin ConnectSIM sticker to a passenger’s SIM card allows them to access data roaming in over 140 countries.

The Malaysia Airlines collaboration is expected to have a significant impact on Flexiroam’s network of 170,000 subscribers and users.

“This partnership represents our first inflight distribution collaboration with a global airline,” said managing director Jef Ong.

“Malaysia Airlines’ significant customer base, combined with its wide range of code-sharing partners, will provide [us with] access to millions of global international travellers.”

Aviation agreements

This is not the first aviation agreement spearheaded by Flexiroam.

In 2017, the company entered partnerships with Korean Air, Scoot TigerAir and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Its wholly-owned subsidiary Flexiroam Asia also signed an agreement in 2017 with technology retailer Bluwire Group to stock its flagship Flexiroam X data roaming product in 14 shops across seven high-traffic US airports.

That campaign resulted in Flexiroam X becoming accessible to over 350 million people travelling through New York, Newark, Houston, Dulles, Denver, Minneapolis and Atlanta.

In May, Flexiroam signed a distribution partnership with China’s Ommur Intelligent Technology, to distribute Flexiroam X across the Chinese mainland.
