Clean TeQ Water (ASX: CNQ) has confirmed the formal completion and handover of its ion exchange water treatment plant for Mackay Regional Council in Queensland.

The company was awarded the $2 million government contract in January 2021 to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply.

It required the upgrade of the Koumala Water Tower, adjacent to the world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

The tower reduces the potential scaling of pipes and improves the taste of the potable water supply to Koumala residents.

Data shows that while Koumala treated water is of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water is harder than what is considered ideal.

Reducing hardness and salinity

The Koumala upgrade saw Clean TeQ design, supply and install an integrated ion exchange and package gas chlorination system to reduce the hardness and salinity of the bore water used and disinfect the treated water.

The company managed the full design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the plant including subcontracting of civil works.

Following performance tests, the old Koumala Water Tower was disconnected and residents were given access to an improved water supply though the new treatment plant.

Growing portfolio

The Koumala project is the latest in Clean TeQ’s growing portfolio of Australian town council contracts.

In July, the company received a $10 million order for the delivery of a recycled water treatment facility for Townsville City Council in Queensland.

Under the contract terms, it will provide design, construction, installation and commissioning of processes and equipment at the Cleveland Bay Purification Plant to treat water to Class A standards for irrigation and local council re-use.

The project is expected to reduce potable water demand for industry and irrigation as part of the council’s integrated water strategy.

Laramba upgrade

In December, Clean TeQ achieved practical completion of a water treatment plant upgrade for Laramba township in the Northern Territory to improve uranium levels.

With a capacity of 360,000 litres per day, the plant uses an ion-exchange resin process to remove naturally-occurring uranium from the bore water.

The project was funded by a $28 million government commitment to address critical infrastructure needs in remote communities experiencing water stress and quality issues.
