Construction company Civmec (ASX: CVL) has boosted its order book by $285 million following the award of new contracts and extensions in New South Wales and Western Australia.

The company’s materials handling works portfolio has grown with two new shiploader projects for Port Waratah Coal Services, which operates the world’s largest coal export facilities in Newcastle.

Civmec has also been awarded a contract for various work at Iluka Resources’ (ASX: ILU) Eneabba rare earths refinery, 270 kilometres north of Perth.

New shiploader

Civmec’s contract for Port Waratah includes the design, fabrication, preassembly, shipping and installation of a new shiploader at the Kooragang terminal, as well as removal of the existing loader.

Once complete, Civmec will transport the shiploader from its Newcastle factory to Kooragang for installation using a heavy-lift ship and remove the decommissioned loader at that time.

The company expects the project – due for completion sometime in 2028 – will create more than 100 specialised jobs and generate local employment and subcontractor opportunities.

Port Waratah facility

The Port Waratah facility comprises the Carrington and Kooragang terminals, which have a combined loading capacity of 138 million tonnes per annum of coal.

The shiploader is a critical part of the export operation and is representative of Port Waratah’s continued investment in the Hunter Valley region.

The new contracts complement more than $40m of maintenance work Civmec secured during the March quarter.

Refurbishment contract

Civmec has also secured a refurbishment contract to extend the operating life of an existing Port Waratah shiploader.

The company’s project maintenance and capital works team will carry out the work this year with the support of its Newcastle-based manufacturing team.

It will include structural remediation works, replacement of mechanical components and surface treatment.

Eneabba refinery tanks

The Eneabba refinery contract involves the design and construction of field-erected tanks and various civil concrete tasks.

Eneabba, the country’s first fully integrated facility for the production of separated rare earth oxides, will establish WA as a strategic hub for the downstream processing of rare earths.

The company will complete the work – which encompasses the design, manufacture and construction of 30 tanks of varying sizes – at its Henderson factory, regarded as the country’s largest heavy engineering facility, then transport the completed tanks to Eneabba for final assembly and installation.

Civmec will also be responsible for onsite civil works at Eneabba including detailed excavation, formwork, reinforcement and the placement of over 11,000 cubic metres of concrete.
