Large-cap support lifted the Australian benchmark while small caps, materials and technology finished the week lower.

Bank Support Lifted The Benchmark Through Uneven Trading

The S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.03% for the week to 8,806.7, even as small caps and materials fell. Banks repeatedly supported the benchmark when selling weighed on other stocks. Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) helped keep the index positive on Tuesday and offset materials losses on Thursday. BHP Group Ltd (ASX:BHP) then contributed to Friday’s rebound after a sharp decline the previous session.

Participation was weaker than the weekly index gain suggests: on Thursday, only 24.9% of traded stocks rose. The broader All Ordinaries gained 0.71%, less than the ASX 200. The benchmark finished above its 20-day average but below its 50-day and 200-day averages. It remained 4.49% below its 60-session high, leaving the week’s rise short of a return to that peak.
