PMET Resources (ASX: PMT) has discovered multiple new lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites at its flagship Shaakichiuwaanaan project and regional Pikwa, Pontois, and Pontax properties in Quebec’s prolific Eeyou Istchee James Bay.
The company reported grades of up to 2.94% lithium oxide, 16.43% caesium oxide, and 3,768 parts per million tantalum pentoxide in surface samples collected from across the portfolio.
Collectively, the properties cover more than 70 kilometres of the continuous and highly-prospective Mickel greenstone belt.
This region—which hosts the core CV9, CV10, CV14, and CV15 pegmatites—is thought to be one of the most significant LCT trends in North America.
Executive vice president exploration Darren L Smith said the discoveries supported the presence of a large, highly-evolved and fertile LCT system within the western area of Shaakichiuwaanaan, which has seen only limited drill testing to date.
Outcrop and Channel Assays
The new high-grade Cosma discovery at Shaakichiuwaanaan, situated 22 kilometres west of the CV5 pegmatite, returned an outcrop grab assay of 9.42% caesium oxide and 267ppm tantalum pentoxide as well as a best channel assay of 4.4 metres at 3.61% caesium oxide and 609ppm tantalum pentoxide including 0.5m at 16.43% caesium oxide.
The emerging Felix spodumene pegmatite, located near the western margins of Shaakichiuwaanaan and near to the Drakkar pegmatite at the Pikwa property, returned best outcrop assays of 1.80% and 1.21% lithium oxide plus multiple mineralised outcrops over 450m strike.
PMET acquired Pikwa in November from Canada’s Azimut Exploration, with previous exploration undertaken for gold, copper, and silver including limited work along the primary greenstone belt trend.
The company is currently designing a maiden surface program at Pikwa focused on LCT pegmatite exploration.
Mickel Trend Extended
Cosma, Felix, and Drakkar have extended the length of the Mickel trend to approximately 10.5km, of which only CV9 (at the eastern-most end) has been drill tested.
Highlight lithium oxide results from a 2024 campaign at CV9 were 30.6m at 0.8%, 10.8m at 1% and 7.7m at 1.35%, with an area of the pegmatite estimated to measure up to 80m true width, demonstrating significant scale potential.
Other pegmatite discoveries include the Skald spodumene-bearing outcrop at Pikwa, as well as the Resisto, Inducto, Capacito, and Overload LCT showings at the advanced Pontax property—none of which have been previously drill-tested.
“The presence of well-mineralised LCT pegmatites at Pikwa, Pontois, and Pontax demonstrates the strength and prospectivity of the company’s broader portfolio of properties,” Mr Smith added.
