- 03Targets defence, aerospace, R&D; new revenue.
Li-S Energy (ASX: LIS) has shipped its first commercial order of Australian-produced lithium metal foil to a leading domestic battery research institution.
Although moderate in scale, the order provides early external validation for Australian-produced lithium metal foil.
The shipment also marks the start of commercial customer engagement for a product Li-S Energy intends to grow into a new revenue stream.
The company has also achieved ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems certification for its lithium foil production line in Geelong, Victoria.
Li-S Energy expects the certification to open supply opportunities across research and development, defence, aerospace, battery manufacturing, lithium, and solid-state battery development markets.
Geelong Line Certified
Li-S Energy established Australia’s first and only dedicated lithium foil production line at its Geelong facility in 2025.
The line was delivered ahead of schedule with support from a $1.76 million matched grant under the federal government’s Industry Growth Program.
The facility produces high-purity lithium metal foil, giving Australia an in-country manufacturing capability that had not previously existed despite the nation’s position as the world’s leading lithium producer.
Li-S believes in-house foil production will reduce its reliance on overseas supply and support the company’s own cell manufacturing.
Quality Approval Expands Market
Independent certifier TQCS International awarded the ISO 9001:2015 certification, which covers the manufacture of lithium foil for batteries.
The certification confirms that Li-S Energy’s Geelong production processes meet international standards for consistency, quality and traceability.
That quality assurance is expected to support supplier qualification processes for customers in highly regulated sectors such as defence and aerospace.
With ISO 9001 certification now in place, the company intends to grow its presence in the lithium foil supply market as a new commercial revenue stream.
Disciplined Work Rewarded
Managing director Dr Lee Finniear said the certification reflected disciplined work by the Li-S Energy team.
“I want to congratulate the Li-S Energy team on achieving ISO 9001 certification for our lithium foil production line,” Dr Finniear said.
“The certification gives […] manufacturing customers the independent quality assurance they require before qualifying LIS as a new supplier.”
He also described the company’s first commercial order as an “important step”.
“It confirms there is genuine demand for an Australian-made alternative to imported foil and, in addition to manufacturing foil for our own LIS battery cells, it opens the pathway to develop our commercial foil sales channels going forward.”
