- 01Rig 202 moves to Musuma-1 ahead of November drilling.
- 02Well tests an eastern Cabora Bassa prospect.
- 03Targeting potential new hydrocarbon accumulation.
Invictus Energy (ASX: IVZ) is continuing preparations for an upcoming drilling campaign at the Cabora Bassa project in Zimbabwe with a relocation of the Exalo Rig 202 from the Mukuyu-2 wellsite to the Musuma-1 exploration well location.
The move follows the completion earlier this month of the Musuma-1 well pad construction, including associated civil works and access road upgrades, along with formal inspection and acceptance of the well pad by drilling contractor Exalo Drilling SA.
Once the relocation is complete, Exalo will commence rig-up operations alongside the remaining rig maintenance and operational readiness activities, followed by final rig acceptance prior to the start of drilling next month.
Musuma-1 will test a high-impact exploration prospect on the eastern margin of the Cabora Bassa basin, and has potential to establish an additional material hydrocarbon accumulation within Invictus’ 3600-square kilometre licence area.
De-Risking Cabora Bassa
Discovered in December 2023 during the Mukuyu-2 drilling campaign, the Mukuyu gas field has multiple hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs containing high-quality gas in the Upper and Lower Angwa Formations.
Invictus expects the well to considerably de-risk future exploration and development of the Cabora Bassa project, while new 3D seismic over the Mukuyu structure may help determine resource scale and assist in high-grading the core development areas of the field.
The Musma-1 well is reported to complement Mukuyu and provides the opportunity to demonstrate the broader prospectivity and scale of the Cabora Bassa basin, providing Invictus with optionality and guiding its initial development efforts in the basin for early monetisation.
The company is targeting an estimated gross mean unrisked prospective resource of 1.2 trillion cubic feet of gas and 73 million barrels of condensate.
High-Impact Exploration Well
Invictus managing director Scott Macmillan said relocating Rig 202 to Musuma-1 was an important milestone as the company moved closer to drilling its next high-impact exploration well.
“With the key drilling and well services contracts secured, supporting infrastructure completed, and the rig move now underway, our preparations continue to advance towards drilling,” he said.
“Musuma-1 represents an exciting opportunity to test a new play on the eastern margin of the basin and we believe there is potential to identify an additional material hydrocarbon accumulation beyond the existing Mukuyu gas field discovery.
“We remain firmly on track to spud Musma-1 in November and look forward to providing further updates as we progress towards drilling.”
Invictus has previously confirmed Musuma-1 as one of the strongest technical cases identified outside Mukuyu and expects the well to improve its understanding of the eastern licence area.
