Impact Minerals (ASX: IPT) will concentrate development capital and management attention on its 80%-owned Lake Hope high-purity alumina (HPA) project in Western Australia after a strategic review of its operations.
The revised approach separates its HPA interests from precious and base metals exploration, with a greater emphasis on capital discipline and readiness for institutional investment.
A June 2025 pre-feasibility study for Lake Hope estimated a net present value at a 10% discount rate of $1.165 billion and a post-tax internal rate of return of 47%, supported by around 33 years of feedstock.
Impact is approximately halfway through its 100-day transformation plan, with pilot plant commissioning targeted by 30 November and further corporate changes scheduled before year-end.
Lake Hope to Take Priority
Lake Hope is moving towards pilot-scale process verification, with plant design completed, equipment purchased, deliveries continuing, and installation underway.
Edith Cowan University has undertaken extensive testing of the front-end flow sheet, while the project uses a patented processing method.
The June 2025 PFS assumptions underpinning the production target and associated financial forecasts remain materially unchanged, although the projected economics are not an achieved operating result.
HPA has applications in semiconductors, LED lighting, batteries, synthetic sapphire, and technical ceramics, providing several potential end markets for the proposed production.
Alluminous to Remain Separate
Impact will retain its 50% interest in Alluminous as an investment assessed against its own criteria, rather than integrate that business into Lake Hope operations.
Alluminous operates a pilot plant in Perth and has supplied initial HiPurA samples to US battery technology business Charge CCCV for testing.
Its September scoping study considered a staged facility producing between 2,000 and 4,000 tonnes annually at a preferred US location, using chemical feedstock and a processing flow sheet distinct from Lake Hope.
That scoping study carries an approximate accuracy range of plus or minus 50%, is based on preliminary technical and economic assessments and provides no certainty that its production or financial forecasts will be realised.
Metals Portfolio Shifts
At Commonwealth, Kuniko (ASX: KNI) earned a 51% interest in the Silica Hill project on 11 August after funding exploration, achieving the milestone one year ahead of schedule.
An updated mineral resource estimate is expected before the end of 2026, while Kuniko can lift its interest to 70% and leave Impact with a 30% holding free carried to a decision to mine.
Impact intends to pursue monetisation opportunities for its Broken Hill tenements rather than fund the years of exploration it believes their development would require.
Future exploration capability will instead be directed towards critical minerals, with manganese, tungsten, and bismuth under consideration at an early stage, and a longer-term ambition to apply high-purity processing expertise beyond alumina.
Critical Minerals Re-Focus
Executive chair Jim McKerlie is overseeing the transformation, which includes separate reporting for the two businesses and a capital management plan, along with new audit, risk, remuneration, and nomination committees.
“Investors were being asked to value two very different business models as if they were one—that ends today,” Mr McKerlie said.
“Lake Hope is now the priority for management time and development capital, with existing precious and base metals exploration assets under review and a re-focus on critical minerals exploration.”
Directors Frank Bierlein and Paul Ingram will retire, with replacements expected to be announced before the annual general meeting on 30 November, when shareholders will also vote on a proposed new company name.
The remaining 100-day plan deliverables—including a three-year strategy, first-year business plan, organisational structure and risk and ESG frameworks—are scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
