Environmental Clean Technologies (ASX: ECT) is positioned to add defence market access to its developing MXene strategy after a wholly owned subsidiary of acquisition target Xenica secured a sublicence from MXene Inc.
The sublicence allows Xenica Inc to produce, use, or sell MXenes for military applications and defence-related end-use, subject to terms of MXene Inc’s underlying exclusive military-use licence from Drexel University.
It complements Xenica’s exclusive Rice University licence to use Flash Joule Heating (FJH) to produce MXenes and two-dimensional amorphous carbon, which ECT would acquire if shareholders approve its proposed Xenica transaction.
ECT’s pathway also includes access to the commissioned Gator Point FJH reactor platform operated by Metallium (ASX: MTM) and US-sourced MAX Phase precursor as it works towards repeatable production and defence customer qualification.
The company expects to complete the proposed Xenica acquisition on or around 22 October 2026, subject to shareholder approval.
Initial Five-Year Term
The sublicence has an initial five-year term with automatic one-year renewals unless terminated by either party, while MXene Inc is entitled to a royalty on future sales.
The arrangement is not a customer contract, with any revenue dependent on acquisition completion, successful repeatable scale-up, production to customer specifications, and customer qualification.
“This agreement adds a critical market-access component to the MXene strategy we have been assembling,” executive chair Faldi Ismail said.
“The opportunity exists because the potential of MXenes has been demonstrated for more than a decade, while production at consistent commercial scale remains a significant constraint.”

Production Bottleneck in Focus
MXenes are two-dimensional advanced materials combining metallic electrical conductivity with tuneable surface chemistry, supporting potential applications across defence, aerospace, electronics, energy storage, advanced coatings, and environmental technologies.
Conventional MXene synthesis relies on hydrofluoric-acid or fluoride-salt etching of a MAX Phase precursor through a multi-day batch process that generates fluoride-containing waste and consumes substantial water.
ECT’s FJH development program is investigating a different manufacturing route that reaches reaction temperature in seconds, eliminates bulk acid handling and materially reduces waste.
Initial FJH testing undertaken through work with Metallium produced MXene material in a fraction of the time required by conventional routes, with the near-term objective now to demonstrate repeatability at scale at Gator Point.
Defence Market Target
ECT considers defence the most appropriate initial market because procurement is performance-led and it sees high-quality Western-produced MXene supply as constrained.
MXene Inc has publicly reported that high-quality production has previously been confined to small batches, while it holds defence contracts and is targeting significantly greater capacity by 2027.
The company also points to US Executive Order 14415, which it says will restrict sourcing waivers from non-compliant sources from 1 January 2027 and accelerate qualification of alternative domestic material supplies.
Initial target applications include electromagnetic interference shielding, radar absorption, infrared camouflage, and thermal management, where MXenes have demonstrated relevant characteristics in published research on specific laboratory formulations.
ECT is yet to produce material at those cited specifications, making independent characterisation, customer sample delivery, and defence qualification key milestones after repeatable production is established.
