- 01Seven Chinese bodies prefer Technegas for lung imaging.
- 02Consensus seeks standardised pulmonary embolism scans.
- 03Follows US and global guideline support.
Cyclopharm’s (ASX: CYC) Technegas radioactive carbon-based nanoparticle aerosol has been recommended by seven leading Chinese medical bodies as their preferred ventilation agent for lung imaging in pulmonary embolisms.
The recommendation was made in a multidisciplinary expert consensus published in the peer-reviewed Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases led by the Chinese Thoracic Society of the Chinese Medical Association.
It included pulmonary vascular, pulmonary hypertension, and nuclear medicine bodies representing physicians who order Technegas imaging, as well as those who perform it.
The consensus was published after a survey of nuclear medicine departments across multiple Chinese hospitals found variations in the way lung scans were ordered and intepreted.
The Technegas recommendation—which was reached unanimously and aims to standardise how lung scans are performed and reported across China—follows joint US and international guidelines released in July that named Technegas as being “generally preferred when available”, with alternative agent DTPA aerosol retained as a backup.
Multidisciplinary Endorsement
The joint endorsement is considered significant because it brings together the disciplines that diagnose and manage pulmonary embolism—namely respiratory physicians, emergency and critical care physicians, cardiologists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians.
The process is led by respiratory and pulmonary vascular medicine specialists who suspect a clot, order a scan, and treat the patient, along with the nuclear medicine specialists who perform and report on the scans.
A request for a lung scan begins with the referring physician and hospital adoption decisions are made by committees drawn from these disciplines.
The consensus recognises lung ventilation/perfusion imaging for screening, follow-up, and assessment of the response to treatment of pulmonary embolism and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, including after balloon pulmonary angioplasty and pulmonary endarterectomy.
It is consistent with Cyclopharm’s Beyond PE strategy that seeks to expand Technegas technology from pulmonary embolism diagnosis into larger global respiratory markets.
Growing Global Support
Cyclopharm managing director James McBrayer said Technegas was now supported by clinical leaders in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and China.
“China’s leading respiratory, pulmonary vascular, and nuclear medicine bodies have reviewed their own clinical experience, surveyed hospitals across China, and unanimously named Technegas as their preferred ventilation agent — that is a powerful statement from the physicians who manage these patients every day,” he said.
“When experts on both sides of the world look at the evidence separately and arrive at the same answer, it speaks to the clinical advantages of Technegas itself.
“Pulmonary embolism is a multidisciplinary disease and when the physicians who order the scan and those who perform it agree [on Technegas], across four continents, it is no longer a regional preference—it is a global standard of care which is now written in the profession’s own words.”
