  • 02Direct test: pane swap; side-by-side with existing glazing.

Smart building materials company ClearVue Technologies (ASX: CPV) has commenced the first real-world validation of its next-generation single-glazed insulating photovoltaic (PV) window technology jointly developed with LandGlass subsidiary LandVac.

The deployment at an undisclosed hotel in Macau will provide real-world measurement and verification data for Project Delta.

Delta is based on delivering windows with a thermal performance comparable to a 1.5-metre brick wall while retaining the thickness of a mobile phone and generating renewable electricity.

The technology also has the potential to reduce operational carbon in buildings and embodied carbon in construction due to its lower weight and reduced material requirements compared to conventional single glazing.

Direct Comparison Test

A single-glazed window in the hotel will be replaced with the new PV technology while an adjacent room will retain the existing glazing to provide a direct comparison.

This will enable electricity generation, thermal performance, and cooling energy consumption to be measured side-by-side under similar operating conditions.

Additionally, three building-integrated PV façade cladding panels incorporating different surface finishes will be installed to compare durability, weathering, and maintenance performance in Macau’s subtropical climate.

While the panels will not be electrically connected, the assessment is expected to provide valuable insights into long-term surface performance and maintenance requirements.

Real-World Validation

ClearVue chief executive officer Doug Hunt said the Macau deployment would be an important step in taking the jointly developed technology from product development to real-world validation.

“The combination of LandVac’s advanced glazing technology with our own PV technology creates a compelling solution for the global retrofit market, improving building thermal performance while also generating renewable electricity,” he said.

“This new product delivers excellent insulation, a 20% less solar heat gain coefficient, and is a lightweight glazing solution roughly three times as efficient as a normal double-glazed unit and around 12 times more efficient than legacy single glazing.”

“Independent real-world data is an important part of progressing this technology towards broader commercial deployment and building confidence among architects, engineers, developers, and building owners.”

Retrofit Opportunity

Non-executive director Andrew Lau said the retrofit market represented one of the largest opportunities to improve the energy performance of the built environment.

“Across Asia, improving the performance of existing buildings is becoming an increasingly important priority as governments, owners, and developers seek practical solutions to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions,” he said.

“Validation under real operating conditions is an essential step in demonstrating technical performance and practical application.

“The data generated through this deployment will provide valuable evidence to support future retrofit projects and broader commercial adoption.”
