Altair Minerals (ASX: ALR) has secured 29 square kilometres of critical adjoining permits to the South Oko prospect within the Greater Oko gold project in Guyana, increasing its exposure to the Oko Shear Contact by 30% to approximately 18 kilometres of strike.
The expansion follows detailed geological reviews and consideration of multiple datasets including aeromagnetic survey, mapping, stream sediment samples, and historical alluvial workings.
The permits are thought to host prospective geology units within a proven mineralised structural corridor, along with favourable hydrothermal structural conduits and iron-rich mafics, stream anomalies positioned within the primary source area to alluvial gold workings, and the potential for geochemical extensions to South Oko along an analogous structural setting.
Altair has now established control over the priority remaining permits on the Oko Shear Contact, where exploration by other operators on the adjoining northern property has led to discoveries totalling 9.1 million ounces of Measured, Indicated, and Inferred gold resources.
Complementary Addition
Chief executive officer Faheem Ahmed said the new permits were a complementary addition to exploration at South Oko and would be immediately integrated into Altair’s current drilling campaign.
“The importance of this milestone should not be underestimated, as we have spent numerous months closely looking at the geology, geochemistry, geomorphology and structural extensions to mineralised corridors within the district, and identified these permits as hosting all the key ingredients required for a potential discovery,” he said.
“We have an astute execution-ready exploration team and fully equipped camps at South Oko allowing us to commence work on these new permits immediately.”
“We believe it will take less than three months to develop new targets that can be seamlessly integrated into our current reverse circulation drilling or a subsequent diamond drill program.”
The expansion reaffirms Greater Oko as the largest gold exploration project in the country, with a contiguous landholding of 457 sq km.
Premier Mining Jurisdiction
Guyana has rapidly emerged as a premier mining jurisdiction, drawing increasing attention from major players in the gold exploration space.
As the last pro-mining and politically stable country within the Guiana Shield, it hosts an extension to West African geology and includes the same Birimian Greenstone that has underpinned world-class gold discoveries in Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso.
Unlike its African counterparts, Guyana remains significantly underexplored—however, companies such as G2 Goldfields and Reunion Gold have recently established Tier-1 discoveries from grassroots exploration campaigns to validate the region’s untapped potential.
“An acreage expansion in a highly competitive and globally recognised district, combined with the fragmented and complex permit structure in Guyana, is a major achievement and a result of our strong in-country networks and supportive Greater Oko vendors,” Mr Ahmed added.
