Already boasting a high-powered team of battery metals industry specialists, newly listed Lithium Universe (ASX: LU7), has announced that Order of Australia Medal (OAM) winner Patrick Scallan has been named as a non-executive director.

Mr Scallan brings with him more than a quarter of a century of management experience at the world’s largest hard rock lithium project, Western Australia’s Greenbushes mine.

During his 25 plus years at Greenbushes, Mr Scallan saw the mine grow its annual output from 200,000 tpa in 1997 to over 1,400,000 tpa today.

Specialist in hard rock exploration

A noted specialist in hard rock exploration, mining and spodumene concentrating, with downstream relationships with major spodumene converters worldwide, Mr Scallan will provide invaluable input into progressing Lithium Universe’s exciting portfolio of Canadian assets.

Mr Scallan will also bring his highly regarded skills in local community relationships, having been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his community and local government contribution while acting as a shire councillor for nearly 20 years during his time at Greenbushes.

Lithium Universe chairman, Iggy Tan, said Mr Scallan will bring a diverse mixture of experience to the company’s board.

“He brings extensive experience in the lithium industry, having operated the world-class Greenbushes mine and processing operation, the largest lithium hard rock mine in the world with the highest-grade orebody.

His expertise in hard rock exploration, mining, and downstream relationships with major spodumene converters worldwide make him a valuable addition to the LU7 team. Moreover, Pat’s community relations experience and expertise will also be vital to the company,” he said.

Scallan’s vision for the company

Mr Scallan said he was attracted to the company’s potential to be a builder of lithium projects in Canada.

“I am excited by the prospects of evaluating a vertically integrated mine to lithium refinery processing hub concept at James Bay.  I see a real opportunity for LU7 to develop a value-added strategy in Québec that meets the Canadian government’s likely requirement for the downstream processing of lithium minerals.  We have a pedigree of lithium experience in LU7 with a proven track record that can deliver on such a strategy,” he said.

Mr Scallan is replacing Ross Cotton who has resigned as a non-executive director to focus on his full-time role as managing director of Balkan Mining (ASX: BMM).
