Additive manufacturing technology company AML3D (ASX: AL3) has ventured into space technology for the first time with the announcement that it will produce a specialised 3D printed high-strength alloy part for an undisclosed US aerospace company.

The company will supply a high strength and corrosion-resistant alloy shape using its proprietary wire additive manufacturing (WAM) technology which will act as a bespoke prototype for the client’s use.

It will allow AML3D to enter the supply chain for the rapidly-growing space exploration sector and help advance the relationships being forged with a number of global aerospace organisations.

Robust properties

AML3D managing director Andrew Sales said the company was specifically sought out for the US project due to the high strength and robust properties associated with its specialised WAM process.

“To have secured a key purchase order for a specialised prototype with a globally-recognised space exploration company is validation of our technological capability,” he said.

“I am confident that the momentum generated from this new order will deliver a strong pipeline of opportunities in parts production for global space exploration in Australia and internationally, as we continue to demonstrate our capabilities within this sector.”

He said AML3D has the “desire and expertise to play a significant role in the burgeoning industry”.

US expansion

Expanding into the US market has been a key element of AML3D’s business strategy.

Mr Sales said the supply of highly-specialised alloys to the new aerospace client showcases the continued progress being made in terms of sector and geographic expansion.

He said the company’s patented WAM technology is considered superior to other competing technologies through its delivery of state-of-the-art bespoke products.

Disrupting tradition

AML3D has developed WAM to disrupt the traditional industrial manufacturing space by 3D printing commercial and large-scale parts for the aerospace, defence, maritime, mining and energy industries.

The company provides services from its technology centre in South Australia and is the original manufacturer of the Arcemy industrial metal 3D printing system, which combines industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 (the digital transformation of production and value-creation processes) to help manufacturers become globally competitive.
