Alderan Resources (ASX: AL8) has completed drilling two of 10 planned holes at its Detroit copper-gold project in Utah with the first intersecting a sequence of limestones and sediments containing pyrite.

In the second hole, minor molybdenum and chalcopyrite were observed down hole.

Detroit is one of four projects held by Alderan in Utah.

The project lies within the larger Detroit mining district in the Drum Mountains region of the state and is located about 175km southwest of Salt Lake City.

The district hosts numerous historical copper, gold and manganese mines.

Alderan has said previously that its projects have seen little modern exploration due to fragmented ownership, and the company considers they have been under-explored for gold.

Good drilling rates being achieved

The drill rig has now moved to another site close to an area where Alderan reported rock chip samples assaying up to 3.2% copper and 9.1 grams per tonne gold.

Managing director Scott Caithness says good daily drilling rates in terms of metres are being achieved.

The first two holes were drilled to their planned depths of 332.4m and 513.07m respectively.

Drilling aims to intersect enough copper and gold mineralisation to underpin a mineral resource later down the track.

Copper and gold exploration has been undertaken in the district by majors such as Anaconda Copper, Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO), Newmont Mining, BHP (ASX: BHP) and Freeport McMoRan but no one company was able to build a significant contiguous land position sufficient to enable district-wide exploration

Freeport McMoRan had tried to consolidate what is now the Detroit project, but those efforts were rebuffed. Records show that about 120,000oz of gold was produced there in the 1870s.

However, Alderan has managed to put together a 24.7sq km ground position through a series of option agreements with tenement owners.

“This provides the company with the opportunity to conduct the first ever modern exploration over the entire mining district,” Alderan stated previously.
