Drilling at Alderan Resources’ (ASX: AL8) historic Drum gold mine in the US has confirmed the presence of high-grade oxide gold mineralisation, which is open below the southern end of the mine’s East Pit.

The explorer intersected a broad gold mineralised interval of 17.8m at 1.70 grams per tonne from 88m downhole, including 6.6m at 2.5g/t gold from 99.2m downhole, and 3.2m at 3.5g/t gold from 101m downhole.

The hole was part of a planned 10-hole drilling program aimed at verifying and extending remnant oxide mineralisation at Drum.

The intersection is believed to highlight the potential for thick, high-grade mineralisation in the Tatow unit – which hosts the majority of historically-mined ore in the East Pit – and in the Lower Pioche quartzite below the contact with the Tatow.

Both targets are untested below the West Pit and down-dip to the southwest.

Alderan has now intersected high-grade oxide gold mineralisation at the southern and northern ends of the 400m-long East Pit, returning a best result of 6.3m at 2.9g/t gold within 16.2m at 1g/t gold, which is also open down dip.

Excellent result

Managing director Scott Caithness said the presence of gold mineralisation at the southern end was an “excellent result”.

“We have confirmed a thick zone of high-grade gold only 62m below surface at the southern end of the East Pit plus a thick and high-grade gold zone in quartzites below the Tatow unit which was the prime source of East Pit ore during historical mining,” he said.

“This opens the possibility of thicker zones of gold mineralisation where the Tatow has not been mined down dip to the southwest beyond the boundary of the East Pit including below the West Pit.”

He said the results provide further confidence in Alderan’s estimate of the gold exploration potential for remnant oxide mineralisation at Drum of approximately 1.2 million tonnes to 1.5Mt at up to 1.4g/t gold for between 42,000 ounces and 67,000oz, based on historical drilling.
