Nickel sulphides have been hit down plunge at Lunnon Metals’ (ASX: LM8) Warren discovery, which is part of the historic Foster mine within the Kambalda nickel project in Western Australia.

Diamond drilling at the Warren channel is designed to target gaps and grow resources.

The project’s previous operator WMC Resources had undertaken very broad space drilling at Warren prior the mine’s closure in 1994.

Lunnon’s recent drilling at Warren has unearthed 8.72m at 3.54% nickel, which was reported in early January.

“The discovery of Baker, and previous drilling at Warren, has confirmed that we can discover significant nickel mineralisation between the existing WMC drilling,” Lunnon managing director Ed Ainscough explained.

“The current program at Warren requires patience, good geology and drilling expertise.”

“That section line of previous WMC holes 160m down plunge had a much larger area of prospective nickel contact than we were interpreting where our current drilling was occurring.”

He added the company was now starting to see results and will continue to drill the gaps left by WMC to grow resources.

High priority assays received

Meanwhile, Lunnon has also received high priority assays from a down plunge hole drilled last quarter with highlights of 1m at 0.50% nickel from 491m; and 10.85m at 0.61% nickel from 518.7m, including 0.60m at 1.18% nickel from 518.7m and 0.55m at 1.12% nickel from 529m.

In the Warren up-plunge area, high priority assays have also been received.

Notable results from this drilling were 1m at 2.10% nickel from 152m, and 2m at 2.05% nickel.

According to Lunnon, Warren hosts 6,400 tonnes in nickel resources, whereas the Foster target which is 1.5km to the southeast has an endowment of 94,000t nickel grading 2.92%.

Of this 94,000t endowment, about 61,000t of nickel was mined up to 1944, with 32,600t remaining in JORC resources.

Kambalda nickel project

The Kambalda nickel project encompasses 23 square kilometres of ground within Western Australia’s renowned Kambalda nickel district, which as produced more than 1.4Mt of nickel metal.

WMC discovered the district in 1966.

Lunnon says its project is strategically located only 25km from BHP’s (ASX: BHP) Nickel West concentrator as a potential future processing option.
