Diversified explorer Kairos Minerals (ASX: KAI) has intersected anomalous gold and lithium during a maiden drilling campaign at its wholly-owned Kangan project, 70 kilometres south of Port Hedland in Western Australia.

The company drilled 133 wide-spaced reconnaissance aircore holes for a total 5,454 metres to test a sizeable gold target adjacent to major structures identified from soil geochemistry and aeromagnetic data.

The holes intersected various lithologies including mafic intrusions and a significant amount of pegmatites, with five holes returning anomalous lithium results.

Four holes returned shallow anomalous gold results above 0.1 grams per tonne in zones near the mafic and ultramafic intrusions, with a best result of 4m at 0.18g/t from 32m.

Three of the holes are located near a 3km-long north-south structure interpreted from an airborne geophysical survey conducted by Kairos last year and adjacent to De Grey Mining’s (ASX: DEG) Hemi deposit.

Most of the assay results received were from 4m composite samples with best intercepts including 4m at 0.18g/t gold from 32m; 4m at 0.13g/t gold from 28m; 4m at 0.1g/t gold from 16m; and 4m at 0.1g/t gold from 16m.

Individual 1m samples have been submitted from the 4m composites for gold and multi-element analysis.

Lithium targets

In addition to the aircore drilling results, three high-priority lithium-caesium-tantalum targets were defined from an Ultrafine+ soil sampling program, with several new areas of pegmatites now identified within the Kangan area.

Kairos said approvals are in progress to clear the areas for a heritage survey.

The survey was originally booked for October but was postponed by the Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation and will now be conducted before year end or early in the new year.

Kairos executive chairman Terry Topping said the gold and lithium results are “highly encouraging”.

“We believe there is potential for a significant gold deposit to be located in the bedrock somewhere beneath these drill lines,” he said.

“The anomalous lithium values add an exciting new dimension to this project as well.”
